Bending steel is a method of obtaining a specific shape from a flat material. In metal processing, a relatively thin, flexible sheet or wire is often pressed into a concave mould or cavity in a forming machine. A good example of this is the bending of reinforcing bars for concrete reinforcement.
How is it done?
A variety of tools and machines are used to bend a piece of metal into a specific shape. The most important machine for the bending process is the press brake. It comprises two forming heads, which act as a punch and die, as well as a clamping system with deep-drawing tools. For simpler shapes such as angles or circles, a hand-operated tool can be used to facilitate the bending process.
What can be bent?
Depending on the technical requirements for the bending radius or the sheet thickness, different steel thicknesses are used for the bending process. Typically, cold-rolled steel grades with a low carbon content are used, which remain dimensionally stable after heating and cooling. They also have good formability, which is required for the process.
The most commonly used material is steel, which can be bent into many different shapes.
Applications for steel bending: Reinforcement of concrete structures, engine manifolds, automotive parts, decorative elements for roofs, facades and fences, playground equipment, repair of welded seams made of steel. Sheet metal etc.
